      Michael Carroll
Michael Carroll, of Brooklyn, worked in the hospital on HMS Otranto.

Michael “Mike” Carroll, son of Tom and Margaret Carroll of Ballyconnigar, Ireland, was born in January 1891. He immigrated to New York, U.S.A. sometime after 1909. He took up the study of medicine and married Nellie Reilly. Their residence was at 170 Congress Street, Brooklyn, N.Y. See Roll of Honor: Citizens of the State of New York who Died While in the Service of the United States During the World War.

During WWI Mike Carroll was drafted and assigned to the ship’s hospital on HMS Otranto. In the collision that sank Otranto, the bow of HMS Kashmir crashed through the hull of Otranto and intruded into the hospital area killing Michael Carroll and other hospital staff. His body washed ashore on Colonsay Island, and he was buried at Kilchoman Cemetery, Islay Island, Scotland. In the 1920s the bodies of the American Otranto victims were returned to the United States. Mike Carroll was re-interred in New York.

      Michael Carroll WWI Service Record

Michael’s brother, Owen Carroll, served on the USS Corsair, which carried the first contingent of the American Expeditionary Force to France, arriving at Saint-Nazaire on 27 June, 1917. During the war, the USS Corsair crossed the war zone many times on convoy escort, and rescued survivors of torpedoed vessels.
