Walter Howard Knight, a son of William Washington Knight (1829 – 1863) and  Mary E Carroll (1839 – 1906), is among the Knight family members in the photo above.  He was born November 28, 1859 in Berrien Co., GA and died June  13, 1934.  Walter Howard Knight is buried at Beaver Dam Cemetery, Ray City, GA.

    This photo appears to be of the “lunch room” at one of the small one or two room school houses that the Knight children attended. Note the small shingled roof over the tin lunch buckets behind the boys legs. These outside shelters were often built at these small schools to keep the rain and sun off of the lunch buckets, as interior room at the schools was limited to teaching. Eating was done outdoors.

      Bryan,
      thanks for that observation. The school practice of eating lunches outdoors continued at Ray City into the 1940s. David Miley used to tell a story about a free range hog that would come into the school yard and steal students’ lunches if they weren’t alert.
